Colosseum combo review: five reviews, and one of them is a language warning

Michael, from the United States, rated this a good tour overall and then wrote, in his own words, “unbeknownst to me the Domus Aurea tour was in Italian. The ticket said English.” He was complimentary about the guides on the other legs, who were English-speaking, so this is one section of the bundle running in the wrong language rather than a tour mis-sold outright. That is one person on one date and I am not going to inflate it into a pattern. But it is the only firsthand account of language delivery anywhere in the reviewer pool for any of these four products, and it lands on the one listing that advertises four languages across a bundle stitched together from several sites. A combo has more moving parts than a single tour: separate guides, separate timed entries, separate rotas. The place that is most likely to break is exactly the place Michael found it broken.

If the language of the guiding is the thing you cannot compromise on, and for a great many readers of this site it is, book the flagship Domus Aurea tour instead. It runs in English, French, Italian and Spanish with an audioguide in all four, and its language coverage is the tour’s whole selling point rather than one line in a bundle description. German is not offered by this listing or by any of the other three, which is worth knowing before you get as far as comparing them.

And if you do book this one, confirm the language of the Domus Aurea section with the operator through your booking confirmation rather than assuming the listing page settles it. That is a dull piece of advice and it is the one Michael’s review actually generates.

Five reviews, and what a 3.9 built on five people means

The other three listings on this site carry 251, 559 and 233 reviews. This one carries five. That is not enough to describe what usually happens; it is barely enough to describe what has happened. A 3.9 on five reviews tells you that at least one person was some way short of happy and very little else, and it would move a long way in either direction on the next dozen bookings. I would not read it as a warning about the operator. I would read it as an admission that nobody, including me, knows what this product is usually like.

The one other reviewer I can see is Esperanza, from Mexico, who wrote in Spanish that she liked it very much and praised the explanations given by the guide, Charo. Two accounts, one warm and one carrying a specific complaint, is the entire evidence base. What it actually contains

More than any other listing here, which is the honest case for it. A guided tour of the Colosseum, entry to the Domus Aurea with the VR experience and its guided tour, entry to the Roman Forum and the Palatine, and hotel pickup and drop-off, over about two and a half hours. It meets inside Parco del Colle Oppio next to the Colosseum. Food and drink are not included. It is not suitable for wheelchair users, people with significant mobility impairments, or people who find enclosed spaces difficult — and it is worth saying that a combination covering the Colosseum, the Forum, the Palatine and an active excavation involves a great deal of uneven ground in a short window. The price, and the part of it I can price

At $190 this is the most expensive thing on the site by a distance, roughly three times the $65 flagship Domus Aurea tour. The park lists its own Domus Aurea guided visit with the VR headset at around €26 including the booking fee, so that is the component I can put a number against. I am not going to do the same for the Colosseum, Forum and Palatine ticket, because I do not have an official figure for it that I would stand behind, and inventing one to make the comparison look tidy would be worse than leaving the gap visible. What I can say plainly is that hotel pickup and a single booking covering four sites are the two things you are paying for, and that neither is cheap. Who it is for

People with one day in Rome, people who want the pickup, and people happy to book a product that almost nobody has reviewed yet. If the Domus Aurea is the reason you are here, do not buy this: the flagship tour covers it for a third of the price, in four languages, with the best rating in the catalogue.
