The two things I keep repeating
Five reviews. The score is 3.9 and it is built on five people. That is not a bad product proven bad; it is a product that has barely been tested, and the sample is so small that one difficult morning moves the average by nearly a point. Compare it with the 559 reviews behind the Golden House tour and you can see how little you are being told. I would not refuse to book on a 3.9 from five. I would go in knowing that is what I was standing on.
The language report. Michael, from the United States, rated it a good tour overall, but reported that the Domus Aurea portion was delivered in Italian even though his booking details were in English. On a product advertised in four languages, running two sites with what may be two different guides, that is a specific and plausible failure mode rather than a grumble. If you are booking in English, French or Spanish and the language matters to you, weigh it. Esperanza, from Mexico, wrote in Spanish that she liked it very much and praised the guide Charo’s explanations, so the Spanish delivery at least has been good for someone. The alternative, and it is a real one
The Colosseum sells its own tickets, and it is a site you can walk into on a normal ticket without a guide, on far more days of the week than the Domus Aurea opens. The Domus Aurea is the constrained half of this pairing: Friday to Sunday, closed on the first Sunday of the month, guided visits only, groups of about 25. So the sensible order is to fix the Domus Aurea slot first and build the Colosseum around it, rather than buying a bundle that has to satisfy both at once.

If you are doing both sites in one day under your own arrangements, do the Domus Aurea first and the Colosseum after. You come out of the Domus Aurea at about 10°C, damp and blinking, into the Colle Oppio park, and the Colosseum is downhill from there. Doing it the other way round means an uphill walk in the sun on tired legs to a timed slot you cannot move.
How the two experiences actually differ
People book this combination expecting two versions of the same thing, and they are not alike. The Colosseum is above ground, enormous, busy, and legible without help. The Domus Aurea is a booked hour and a half underground in a hard hat, at about 10°C, looking at brick and fresco fragments with a headset rebuilding the rooms over them, on a site that is still being excavated. One of them is a monument; the other is closer to a site visit. They sit within a few hundred metres of each other and the Colosseum was built on the drained lake in the palace’s grounds, which is the connection worth carrying between them — the two compared properly. If enclosed spaces or steps are a concern for anyone in your party, read the stated exclusions before you book a bundle rather than after.
