Photography in the Domus Aurea: what I can and cannot tell you

I am not going to state a photography rule, because the archaeological park is the only place worth getting one from and it is the park’s site, not mine. Ask your guide at the meeting point, and confirm anything that matters at colosseo.it↗ before you travel. What I can tell you is what the conditions do to your photographs, and the answer is: quite a lot. It is dark. The visit is guided and moves as a group, so you are shooting on somebody else’s schedule. You are wearing a hard hat on uneven, damp ground at around 10°C. And the best thing in the building — the octagonal room under its oculus — is above you and does not photograph the way it looks.

What actually limits your pictures

Not the rules, in my experience — the conditions. An hour and a quarter to an hour and a half in a group of up to about 25 means you get the shot when the group is there, not when the light is. The surviving painting is on the vaults above head height, which is an awkward angle in the dark. And the VR sequence is not photographable in any useful sense, which is worth knowing because it is the part everyone wants to show people afterwards — what the headset does.

What I would actually do

Carry a phone and nothing else, keep both hands free for the uneven floors, and take fewer pictures than you think you should. The octagonal room and its oculus, the barrel vaults and the fresco fragments are the three things worth pointing at — what you are looking at. Then put it away, because ninety minutes is not long and the excavation is not the same twice.
